These are sample numbers for this concept, not results from real members.

On a live site only members who opt in appear, with initials, never photos without consent. Progress depends on training history, attendance, sleep and age: new lifters usually add weight quickly at first, then more slowly. No one here is promised a number.

Programs

Strength Club

Squat, press, deadlift and bench in groups of six, with a little more weight every week you show up.

Led by Marcus Delgado, CSCS, Starting Strength Coach. For anyone who can already move a barbell, or has finished Foundations. Most members are here.

A coach's hour at Ironhouse is shared by six lifters, so you pay about a sixth of a private session and still have a coach on every set.

The price of a coached hour

$421

a month for a $10 gym plus a personal trainer, $97 a coached session

$229

a month at Ironhouse on 3 a week, $17.63 a coached session

Same coached hours, $192 less a month.

How it's worked out: a month is 4.33 weeks. The $10 gym line is $10 plus the trainer's rate for each coached session. Ironhouse uses the plan that covers your sessions: 2 a week $179, 3 a week $229, Unlimited $279. A comparison for planning, not a quote.

The head coach

Rae Okafor, head coach at Ironhouse, coaching a lifterRae Okafor coached strength for a college track and field team for six years before she opened Ironhouse on 30th Street in 2019. She runs Athlete and the Saturday Strength Club, and she writes every program on the board. Her rule for the floor: nobody adds weight until the last set looks like the first.

She holds the NSCA's CSCS and USA Weightlifting's Level 2 coaching licence, and she still competes in masters weightlifting.

Your first month

Most people arrive with years of random workouts. The first month narrows it to five lifts, then turns them into numbers you can read.

  1. ScreenYour coach watches you squat, hinge, push and pull, and notes what to work around.
  2. LearnFive lifts, one at a time, with an empty bar or lighter. No class moves on without you.
  3. LogEvery set goes in your paper log. The weight goes up in small steps, every week you come.

Questions

I've never touched a barbell.

Most members hadn't. Foundations teaches the five lifts over four weeks, two sessions a week, with an empty bar or a lighter one.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No. Memberships are month to month. Cancel online any day, and billing stops at the end of the month you've paid for.

What happens at the free intro?

Forty-five minutes: a short readiness questionnaire on paper, a movement screen, then you train the class with your coach beside you. You leave with your plan in writing.

I'm 55 with a cranky knee.

Talk to Dana. Strong at 40+ uses trap bar deadlifts, box squats and longer warm-ups. If your doctor has given you limits, bring them and we train inside them.

Where do I park?

Street parking on Upas and 30th, two-hour limit, and bike racks at the door. The 7 bus stops at University and 30th, a four-minute walk.
