Care for dogs, cats and rabbits
The full price list, by species, and our health library. Prices include the exam room, the technician's time and a written plan.

Dogs
From the first puppy visit to the last senior check. Dogs who hike and swim around here get asked about ticks and lepto every year.
Book for a dog| Service | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Wellness exam | $68 | Nose to tail: weight, heart, joints, eyes, ears and teeth. About 30 minutes, on the floor if they'd rather. |
| Rabies and DHPP | $28 and $36 | Rabies is required by North Carolina law from four months. We never give more than two shots in one visit. |
| Lepto and Lyme | $32 and $40 | For dogs who swim in the French Broad or hike the Parkway. We ask where they go before we suggest either. |
| Heartworm and tick test | $62 | One blood test for heartworm, Lyme, ehrlichia and anaplasma, once a year. |
| Dental cleaning | from $420 | Under anesthesia with full-mouth X-rays. A written estimate first, and a call before any extraction. |
| Spay and neuter | from $380 | Day surgery with pre-surgery bloodwork and pain relief to go home. |

Cats
Cat mornings on Wednesdays from 8 to 11, a separate cat room every day, and exams done mostly in the carrier.
Book for a cat| Service | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Wellness exam | $68 | In the cat room, away from dogs. Most of it happens with your cat in the bottom half of the carrier. |
| Rabies and FVRCP | $28 and $34 | Indoor cats still need rabies by law. FVRCP every three years once the kitten series is done. |
| FeLV test and vaccine | $48 and $38 | For kittens, and for any cat who goes outside or lives with one who does. |
| Senior bloodwork | $145 | From age 10: kidneys, thyroid and blood pressure, where small changes show first. |
| Dental cleaning | from $420 | Cats often have painful tooth lesions that only show on X-rays, so every cleaning includes them. |
| Spay and neuter | $190 and $260 | Day surgery. Kittens can go home the same afternoon. |

Rabbits and small pets
Rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets see Dr. Raman on Thursdays. A rabbit that stops eating or pooping needs a vet the same day; after hours, go to the ER.
Book a Thursday| Service | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbit and small pet exam | $78 | Thursdays with Dr. Raman, in a quiet room. 40 minutes. |
| Rabbit dental check | $45 | Rabbit teeth grow all their lives. A look at the molars with a scope. |
| Spay and neuter, rabbits | from $320 | Day surgery, home the same evening with pain relief and a feeding plan. |

Ticks in the Blue Ridge
Blacklegged and lone star ticks are out on any day above freezing here. Check ears, armpits and between the toes after a Parkway hike. The yearly heartworm blood test also checks for Lyme, ehrlichia and anaplasma.

Leptospirosis and river water
Lepto spreads through water and mud that wildlife urine has reached: creeks, puddles, the French Broad's banks. It can hurt the kidneys and liver, and it can pass to people. If your dog swims or drinks standing water, ask about the yearly vaccine.

Every part of true lilies and daylilies, even the pollen or the vase water, can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat chewed one, go to the emergency hospital now. Do not wait for signs.

This sweetener is in some peanut butters, mints, vitamins and baked goods. In dogs it can drop blood sugar within an hour. Read the label before sharing. If your dog ate some, call the ER or Animal Poison Control.

Heartworm prevention, every month
Mosquitoes carry heartworm, and the Southeast has the highest rates in the country. The American Heartworm Society recommends prevention all year. A monthly chew costs far less than treatment.

Getting a cat into the carrier
Leave the carrier out at home for weeks with a blanket in it. Pick one whose top comes off. Cover it with a towel in the car. We do most of the exam with your cat in the bottom half.

Dental disease starts early
Most dogs and cats show signs of dental disease by age three. Bad breath, dropping food and chewing on one side are early signs. Most of it sits under the gum line, which is why every cleaning includes X-rays.

Visits at about 8, 12 and 16 weeks for DHPP boosters, deworming and a fecal test, then rabies at 16 weeks. North Carolina requires rabies by four months. Skip dog parks until the series is done.

Older pets: twice a year
From about 8 for dogs and 10 for cats, a year is a long time. Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork catch kidney, thyroid and joint changes while they are easier to manage.
